How to Tie the Hijjab

Okay, so, I'm not an artist ... are we clear on that?     This is the best I can do!

The first two examples are how most Muslim ladies wrap or tie their scarves.

Hijjab #1

Start with a triangular scarf, or a large (4 feet) square scarf folded diagonally.

#1. Place the scarf over your head, centering the long edge of the scarf horizontally over your forehead, just above your eyebrows. #2. On either side of your forehead, create a neat tuck as you pull the ends of the scarf downward, holding the scarf securely in place over the forehead.
#3. Pin the scarf under your chin, and let the long points fall gracefully... or #4. After pinning the scarf, drape the scarf ends over your shoulders, as shown

Hijjab #2

Start with a rectangular scarf, about 2 feet wide by about 5 feet long.

This method is considerably more complex, and may take awhile for you to get the hang of ... especially if you want it to stay in place all day! Ask me how I know.

#1. Drape the scarf unevenly over your head, allowing about 1 foot of scarf to dangle on your left side. Create a "tuck" at your temple to allow the long EDGE of the scarf to cross your forehead in a smooth line. #2. Create another tuck at the right side, letting the long end hang down.
#3. Bring the scarf close under your chin and back up towards your left temple. Pull snuggly up, keeping pressure at the first tuck (see "x" on the picture) to keep the scarf from sliding. You want this VERY snug! #4. Bring the scarf up over the top of your head, to the other side, keeping it snug and keeping the "tucks" at the temples secure. The bottom of the scarf should be about at the level of your chin, give or take a couple of inches.
#5. Tuck the long EDGE of the scarf between your left cheek and the layer of scarf already in place, securing the whole firmly. You're done!

These last two are not how the Muslim ladies would wear them, generally speaking, but are easy to do and still have the same effect.

Hijjab #3

Start with a triangular scarf, which can be smaller than #1 above. Place over your head, bring the ends down and tie behind your neck, under your hair, bandana-style. Piece of cake!

Hijjab #4

Starts like #3 above, but with a "twist"! The little girl on the main web page is wearing her scarf like this.

#1. Place the scarf over your head, centering the long edge of the scarf horizontally over your forehead, just above your eyebrows. #2. Pull the ends of the scarf downward.
#3. Cross the ends behind your neck (beneath your hair), and extend the ends on each side of you. Twist each length of scarf, as shown here on the right side of the picture #4. Holding the ends tightly to keep them from untwisting, criss-cross them over your head, and wrap each end around the band formed by the opposite end and tucking the points in.
